Youth policy
Rapidly growing production potential and progressive development urge Surgutneftegas to pursue a balanced HR management policy focused on searching and recruiting of inventive, ambitious youth. Incrementally implemented corporate youth strategy and accumulated HR potential enable the Company to maintain a top-quality workforce able to deliver high performance results.
Following its youth development initiative, the Company cooperates with over 100 education establishments of Russia. Over 1,800 employees received the Company’s grants to partially cover costs of industry-related education at Russian educational institutions.
OJSC “Surgutneftegas” annually concludes contracts with Russian higher and secondary education establishments to meet the Company’s specific training needs. In pursuit to enhance the quality of education, provide fully furnished laboratories, develop and implement community-oriented programs, the Company sponsors G.V. Plekhanov Saint Petersburg State Mining Institute, Tyumen State Oil and Gas University, Surgut Petroleum Technical College and Yakut State Agricultural Academy.
Each year, the Company’s business units welcome over 2,500 students and trainees to accomplish their practical training requirements.
Over 500 university and college graduates join Surgutneftegas annually.
Today, over 1,500 graduates work for the Company. Employees under 35 account for 35% (over 34,000 pers.) of the total Surgutneftegas’ staff.
Full-time college or university graduates recruited by the Company’s HR service in accordance with industry-related training and skills development plan, or based on interview results, and just assigned to a new workplace, receive the status of Surgutneftegas’ young professionals.
The Company’s policy on newly employed young professionals is governed by the provisions of “Young Professionals Policy Regulations of OJSC “Surgutneftegas” approved by OJSC “Surgutneftegas” together with Surgutneftegas’ Trade Union.
The young professional status allows a newcomer to successfully adapt to a new workplace and enjoy great training and development opportunities in the Company’s business units. Each young professional occupies a suitable vacant position that provides a chance to better assimilate into new working environment, participate in the Company’s R&D projects, develop new skills and further master a profession, as well as gives an excellent platform to launch their career. Having access to the corporate fund of knowledge, expertise and R&D achievements, and using their own initiative, the Company’s young professionals showcase high performance results which is also a part of the concerted efforts of their mentors – the Company’s top and senior experts, – HR staff and the Youth Association.
In an effort to support the promising R&D projects, involve young scientists in activities that help improve the existing operations for better working conditions and deliver new technologies for overall economic efficiency, the Company encourages participation in its Scientific and Technical Conference have been held annually for already 30 years. The authors of the best research works are awarded foreign traineeships.
Since April 2003, in recognition of the most remarkable R&D projects, development and implementation of productivity enhancement projects that proved to bring the maximum benefits, the distinguished youth is given the Viktor S. Deshura Award (in the name of the Chief Engineer of Production Association “Surgutneftegas”,
1983-1995).
The Company’s young professionals are active participants and repeated winners of scientific conferences, forums, and artistic youth events of Khanty-Mansiysky Autonomous Okrug, including “The Golden Future of Yugra” and “The Black Gold of Yugra” contests.
Founded on November 23, 2003 by decision of the youth foundation conference, based on the existing youth boards of Surgutneftegas business units, the Youth Association is a self-regulating, non-profit organization aligning the Company’s young employees around the common mission, and pursuing youth policy objectives.
The Association was formed to enhance the role of youth in the Company’s operations and community work, as well as to involve employees under 35 into R&D activities, facilitate workplace adaptation, organize leisure activities and assist in solving various social problems.
The Youth Association is supported by the Company’s authorities together with Surgutneftegas’ Trade Union. The Youth Association Board is a permanent collegial governing body consisting of 15 members headed by the Chairman of the Board. The Association is comprised of the youth boards established by the Company’s 47 business units.
The Youth Association’s activities include:
• information distribution;
• young newcomers adaptation/HR development;
• research and development;
• community work;
• cultural and leisure events;
• sports events.
Surgutneftegas employees under 35 may join numerous clubs formed as open non-profit organizations under the auspices of the Youth Association. These clubs include Young Scientists Club, Young Family Club, KVN Club (the Club of Cheerful and Smart), Live Music Club “Surround”, Paintball Club, Ski Club, Billiard Club, Cyber Sport Club, and Diving Club “UWEX”.
Since November 2003, the Youth Association has published the newspaper “Youth Crossroads” highlighting achievements of young employees of the Company’s business units, keeping track of Surgutneftegas operating and social milestones, and addressing major problems of the Company’s youth. Today, the editorial staff consist of young people who devote their free time to publishing. They are not journalists by profession but together they form a team of talented, creative, and vigorous enthusiasts. In 2008, they launched a new glossy magazine of the same title.
The Company has its own web server “Youth Crossroads”, which is an official web-based information resource created by the Youth Association. Easily accessed by the Company’s users, the corporate intranet contains the latest news about youth current affairs, announcements of coming events initiated by the Association or other public organizations, and other information related to young employees of OJSC “Surgutneftegas”.
