Key areas of environmental activity

 Sludge pits reclamation

The most important environmental task of OJSC “Surgutneftegas” is to reduce the negative impact of drilling wastes disposed in sludge pits.

For this purpose, OJSC “Surgutneftegas” applies enhanced scientifically and economically proved technologies of reclamation providing effective restoration of ecological functions of disturbed lands occupied by sludge pits.

According to the results of experimental and scientific-theoretical work carried out by OJSC “Surgutneftegas” for many years together with the Institute of Forest of V.N. Sukachev SB RAS and lasting many years, a unique technology called forest rehabilitation has been developed and is widely used, it involves reclamation of sludge pits without backfilling. Project document for the said technology “Construc-tion, running and remediation of sludge pits at the license blocks of OJSC “Surgut-neftegas” in the territory of the State Forest Fund of the middle taiga subzone in Western Siberia” received a positive state environmental expert review and is ap-proved by the order of the Federal Supervisory Natural Resources Management Service No. 319 dated 16.04.2015.

This technology takes into account geological and climatic conditions of the region. It is based on the natural processes of transformation of oil sludge into soil forming material and stimulates the process of unassisted overgrowing of sludge pits.

In the reporting period, 64 sludge pits were reclaimed using this method.

Exceptional efficiency of “forest” rehabilitation is proved by the results of re-search of phytocenoses formed on reclaimed sludge pits surpassing dominating ones in productivity and biological diversity.

Numerous advantages of the forest reclamation technology used by OJSC “Surgutneftegas” in comparison with other disturbed lands reclamation methods arouse reasonable interest from largest Russian oil and gas producing companies.

In 2016, permanent commission on acceptance of the reclaimed lands in-spected 42 sludge pits reclaimed with this method. The commission recognized all these objects as fully compliant with the requirements of the current legislation. As a result, the land was returned to the State Forest Fund.

Implementation of “green office” principles in administrative buildings of OJSC “Surgutneftegas”

In order to draw attention of the employees to environmental issues the Company started to actively implement “green office” principles in all administrative buildings. A program of energy conservation and efficiency has been developed and is implemented successfully. This program includes the following measures:
- usage of modern energy efficient and energy-saving (LED, electrodeless, flu-orescent) lamps and spotlights in indoor and outdoor lighting systems;
- usage of electronic ballasts in fluorescent spotlights;
- usage of programming units and motion sensors in indoor lighting systems and daylight sensors and programming units in the outdoor lighting;
- optimization of operating mode of electrical equipment and heat consumption of buildings;
- replacement of air conditioners with multi systems;
- implementation of energy efficient pumping modules and ventilators;
- connection of office equipment to power through blackout units (pilots) and disabling of these units after use;
- implementation of metering devices, water flow and heat consumption regulators.

In addition, the Company utilizes electronic document flow (DIRECTUM sys-tem), reducing the amount of document printing, including color printing, double-sided printing is set by default on all printers, which allows to drastically reduce the amount of consumed stationary paper. Offices of the Company employ a separate waste collection that distinguishes used stationary paper from packing board. Paper and board are collected and then are taken away for processing (shredding) in the Company’s paper cutting unit (shredder). Shredded and compacted paper wastes, being valuable recoverable resources, are transfered to specialized enterprises ac-cording to existing contracts.

Polymer wastes are accumulated separately from other wastes and are transfered to a specialized polymer wastes processing company for utilization.

To enhance personnel productivity, OJSC “Surgutneftegas” creates not only comfortable working conditions, but also provides offices and halls with a large number of well-groomed indoor plants. Throughout the year, during short northern summer and severe long winter, our offices remain truly green.

The Company’s environmental activity is not limited to developing and moni-toring the implementation of local regulations governing the conduct of operations and observance of technical discipline in order to minimize the negative impact of production processes on the environment and meet the requirements of current leg-islation. OJSC “Surgutneftegas” pays close attention to promotion environmental responsibility and personnel culture through environmental training of its workers and managers.

The implementation of corporate training programs in 2016 allowed to improve the skills of 827 specialists of OJSC “Surgutneftegas” in the field of waste management. To reduce costs of regular professional training of its employees handling wastes of I-IV hazard classes, OJSC “Surgutneftegas” developed profes-sional training courses for its managers and specialists responsible for decisions on business activities and other issues as well as workers admitted to manage wastes.

Moreover, the Company continued to upgrade skills of its employees in ambient air protection: Four specialists received state-recognized certificates. Fifteen employees had training under the course of provision of environmental safety by managers and specialists of the environmental departments and environmental control system.

In the reporting year, the Company’s business units and headquarters took part in clean-up activities in the territories of oil fields located near populated areas and supported single Tree-planting Day. Thus, green ashes and Canadian maples were planted in Molodezhny City Park, composed mostly of birch trees, and the avenue of fir trees Za Saimoy Park. With an active support of Surgutneftegas, Federal State Budgetary Institution “the Yugansky” State Reservation” organized in Surgut a large-scale planting of fir trees as part of the “100 years - 100 trees” event to celebrate the anniversary of the Russian System of Special Protected Natural Areas.

R&D activity in the field of environmental protection

In order to improve the effectiveness of environmental protection measures and enhance the environmental safety system, OJSC “Surgutneftegas” collaborates with scientific institutions and public partner organizations, conducts its own research and appraisal works.

In 2016, the Institute for Biological Problems and Cryolithozone, Siberian Branch of RAS, performed monitoring of bioresources and cryolithozone within the Severo-Talakanskoye, the Vostochno-Talakanskoye and the Alinskoye license blocks in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia).

The results of the research carried out by the scientists of one of the leading research and development institutes in Russia – PJSC “Giprotyumenneftegaz” – are currently used to conduct hydraulic calculations, design field pipelines and plan works to ensure maximum operational reliability of the existing field pipelines at the fields of OJSC “Surgutneftegas” in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia).

In the territory of nature park “Numto”, the Company continued research in the field of biological monitoring of the Vatlorskoye, the Verkhne-Kazymskoye and the Suryeganskoye fields started in 2012-2015.

Field work was carried out by the expeditionary unit of LLC “Ekomaks” comprised of highly qualified specialists of leading Russian scientific institutions and Yugansky State Nature Reserve. The studies included assessment of key components of bio-geocenoses and analysis of the change dynamics of the examined territory.
